It is the first Chilean bank to adopt this weekly work regime. In the financial area, it is added to what was announced by Coopeuch.

Scotiabank Chile announced that it will become the first bank to reduce the working hours of its workers to less than 40 hours per weekalong with a hybrid model that combines face-to-face and teleworking.

Specifically, the weekly working day will go from 42 to 39 hours.

“At Scotiabank we seek to promote a flexible culture, where improving the quality of life of our employees, enhancing flexibility and promoting co-responsibility is the goal we have set for ourselves,” he said. Jacqueline BalbontinVP of People Management, Culture and Corporate Affairs.

The executive added that “with this measure we want to contribute significantly to the well-being of our workers, allowing them to more effectively reconcile their personal and work lives, and it is a reflection of the confidence we have in our team, which has shown high rates of commitment to the organization and a great sense of pride for the company in which they work”.

From Scotiabank they assure that this initiative is possible “thanks to the advances in productivity that the modernization and digital transformation agenda deployed has brought”, which has allowed it to “be more efficient in the use of time”.

hybrid model

Within the framework of this new way of working and after collecting the lessons learned from the pandemic, Scotiabank will permanently implement a hybrid and flexible work model, which combines face-to-face work -through assistance shifts- with remote work.

“Thanks to the fact that the Bank already had teleworking policies, we were one of the first organizations in the financial industry to have a model that combines face-to-face work with remote work,” explained Balbontín.

The bank representative indicated that this measure “has been highly valued by our team, and is the result of permanently listening to the workers. We are convinced that this scheme will be key in the value offer to attract and retain the best talent”.

Other experiences

In this way, the Canadian capital bank joins the Chilean savings and credit cooperative Coopeuch, which announced in early March that it would adopt the 39-hour weekly modality for its workers.

Meanwhile, other flexibility experiences consist of a 4-day shift with 3 days off, as implemented a year ago by the Chilean company People & Partners.

Currently, the maximum number of ordinary hours contemplated in the legislation is 45 hours per week and the government of Gabriel Boric promised to promote the reduction project to a maximum of 40 hours, promoted in 2019 by the then deputy Camila Vallejo.
