A strong response was received by the presidential candidate for the Historical Pact, Gustavo Petro, by the Commander of the Colombian National Army, General Eduardo Zapateiro Altamiranda.
Via Twitter, Petro wrote: “While the soldiers are killed by the Gulf Clan, some of the generals are on the Clan’s payroll”in response to fellow Army member Alexander Chala Saenz, who had previously stated that six soldiers were killed in Antioquia and five wounded at the hands of the armed group.
Consequently, through a thread on the aforementioned interaction platform, General Zapateiro dispatched himself and made six points known in response to Petro.
First, Zapateiro shared a heartfelt message in which he wrote that Nobody knows how much the pain of the death of a soldier weighs more than those who wear the uniform of the armed institution of the Government, without leaving aside the families and the Homeland. Indeed, for the commander of the Army, Petro is taking advantage of the situation and in view of this he attacked him saying that “the supreme sacrifice for the country should not be used in political campaign narratives.”
After this, he brought up a figure in relation to the number of soldiers killed since last year throughout the national territory: “Since 2021, more than 500 soldiers have been killed and injured during the fulfillment of the mission and their sacrifice. it was invisible, there were no pronouncements. Curious that now the death of the heroes of the country does generate affliction and is used for other accusations”, Zapateiro Altamiranda specified.
As a third point, the man accused the candidate of the Historical Pact of engaging in “politicking.” For the commander of the Army, what the politician is doing is going to his position using his investiture, so he better asks him to fulfill the duty he has as a citizen and make a “substantiated complaint” before control bodies such as the Prosecutor’s Office in which he announces the name of the generals that, according to the trill, Petro says are on the Clan’s payroll.
Likewise, General Eduardo Zapateiro asked the also economist not to generalize and respect: “As a senator, you are part of the group that you dare to point out as “drug trafficking politicians.” As a citizen I recommend you not to generalize. Respect above all else”, reads the Twitter thread.
Likewise, based on his experience, the Commander of the Army pointed out that he has not seen any of his peers who have appeared on the television screen receiving “evil money.” On the contrary, he replied that “Colombians have seen you (Gustavo Petro) receive money in a garbage bag.”
Finally, the active member of the National Army once again asked for respect, but beyond that he praised the work of the institution of military force that defends sovereignty.
“To the oldest institution in this country, whose members, men and women, unconditionally, have defended the democracy of this nation for more than 200 years, even offering their own lives, I demand respect,” concluded General Eduardo Zapateiro Altamiranda .
