Russia-Ukraine war. Target Transnistria: Moscow wants to take control of southern Ukraine to open a door to this pro-Russian separatist region in Moldova

MOSCOW.- Russia aspires to fully control southern Ukraine and the Donbass region (east), in order to have a land bridge to Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.a senior Russian military official reported on Friday.

“Since the start of the second phase of the special operation, which began two days ago, one of the objectives of the Russian Army is to establish total control over Donbass and southern Ukraine”, declared Rustam Minnekayev, deputy commander of the forces of the military district of the center of Russia.

The soldier explained that this will ensure a land corridor to Crimea and an influence on the key infrastructures of the Ukrainian economy, such as the Black Sea ports through which shipments of agricultural and metallurgical products are made,” he said, quoted by Russian agencies, at a meeting with companies at a military-industrial complex in Yekaterinburg.

According to Minnekaev, Control of southern Ukraine will also help pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria, who since 1992 control a territory of Moldova bordering western Ukraine.

“Control of southern Ukraine is also a corridor to Transnistriawhere too we observe cases of oppression of the Russian-speaking population”, stated the general.

Moldova is a small Romanian-speaking country that was part of the former Soviet Union and is now run by a pro-Western government.

“Apparently now we are at war with the whole worldLike in World War II. The whole of Europe is against us, they have never liked Russia,” Minnekayev added, according to the TASS news agency.

kyiv has always been clear that Russia’s goal was to create a land corridor from Crimea to Donbass, but Minnekayev’s claims involve going further west of the peninsula from the city of Kherson, which they already control, through Mykolaiv and Odessa.

Transnistria has just over 500,000 inhabitants. It is internationally recognized as a part of the Republic of Moldovaalthough it is controlled by the separatist government, which declared independence in 1990. Only the Republic of Abkhazia, the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Artsakh (three states without majority recognition within the international community) recognize independence.

Also, in Transnistria is the largest arsenal from the Cold War: a warehouse with some 20,000 tons of weapons and ammunition.
